Savage Politics: Why I'm not voting for Obama

Very well said. From Savage Politics: ...Obama is the nominee, because the Democratic Party’s leaders, Dean, Pelosi, Brazile, Schumer, Fowler et al, conducted a dishonest primary, violating every Democratic rule and procedure. This was coupled with the paid off Mainstream Media that did everything possible to sell Obama as the nominee, insulating the public from the facts, spinning Obama’s lies, and creating additional misinformation to protect their crafted image. Thus, we have a truly unworthy candidate. Obama’s lies and/or reversals on NAFTA, telecom immunity, publicly financed campaigns, lobbyist donations, universal health care, abortion rights, equal rights for gay people, equal pay for women, hazardous waste disposal, immigration reform, private school vouchers, taxes, foreign policy(Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Georgia, the status of Jerusalem), and gun control are disquieting. His connection to the mortgage/banking failure is enraging. His personal relationships with his hate-filled and mean-spirited preachers, Rev. Wright and Catholic Priest Fr. Pfleger,...

What if Bush had succeeded in privatizing Social Security?

Robert Shiller: "To the extent that an equity culture leads to entrepreneurship and investment and wealth creation, I'm for it. But I was not, for example, in favor of George W. Bush's plan to privatize Social Security. Can you imagine what would have happened to people retiring today if that plan were in place? I like to think of capitalism as a game. We need to make sure we structure the rules of the game in such a way that we don't get injured while playing it." Shiller also says, renting is better than buying (so why the violins for those we are paying to keep in homes they can't afford, when they'd be better off renting?): "...homeownership is actually not a great idea from an investment standpoint. A better strategy would be to diversify as much as possible—put your money into stocks, bonds, many different geographies—and then use the...

Is John McCain listening? Are any politicians listening?

I know Obama is not listening to anything that does not serve Obama. But how about McCain? Has he heard the many people who are interested in his candidacy as an alternative to Obama saying this: 1) Enough with the talk of abortion and embryonic stem cell research restrictions - most Americans are a) pro-choice (for example, Barbara Bush) & pro-embryonic stem cell research (for example, Nancy Reagan) and b) DON’T WANT GOVERNMENT LEGISLATING RELIGIOUS ISSUES. Maybe it's the part of the country I'm from, or it's people of a similar education level thinking similarly, but I have yet to find a Republican woman (and I ask every one I meet) who is not pro-choice. It seems ignoring women is common to both parties. Have your position, John McCain, but respect ours. Don't pander to the religious right as though the rest of us - the majority - don't exist....

Obama born in Kenya, relatives say

Wouldn't it be nice if the nightmare of another president as unqualified and self-centered as George W. Bush ended before it began. From the Times Herald: A Lafayette Hill attorney filed a lawsuit in federal court Thursday challenging Sen. Barack Obama's claim to United States citizenship. The action seeks to remove the Democratic candidate from the November ballot. To be eligible to serve as U.S. president, a person must be born in this country. According to Obama's birth certificate, which his campaign posted on its Internet site in June to quell rumors that he is foreign born, the Illinois senator was born in Hawaii on Aug. 6, 1961. On Thursday, Philip Berg filed a temporary restraining order in federal court to bar Obama from running for president, claiming the Democratic candidate was actually born in Africa. "We really don't believe he was born in Hawaii," Berg said. "We think he...

Hershey's fake chocolate

They already use fake vanilla... Time to try Ghirardelli or organic chocolate, with real vanilla and real chocolate! From Today: ...Oh, milk chocolate. Wherefore art thou? Apparently not in some Hershey’s products that contained milk chocolate for years, and that has passionate chocolate aficionados fighting mad. Products such as Whatchamacallit, Milk Duds, Mr. Goodbar and Krackel no longer have milk chocolate coatings, and Hershey’s Kissables are now labeled “chocolate candy” instead of “milk chocolate.” What’s going on here? On Friday, TODAY consumer correspondent Janice Lieberman reported that Hershey’s has switched to less expensive ingredients in several of its products. In particular, cocoa butter — the ingredient famous for giving chocolate its creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture — has been replaced with vegetable oil. The removal of cocoa butter violates the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s definition of milk chocolate, so subtle changes have appeared on the labels of the Hershey’s products with...

McCain-Palin oppose embryonic stem cell research; adult vs. embryonic stem cell research

I strongly believe government has no business legislating religious beliefs; as Barry Goldwater said, "There is no place in this country for practicing religion in politics." If McCain is really a "maverick", then he needs to distinguish himself from George W. Bush and the other religious fundamentalists, who neither represent the majority of Americans nor the traditions upon which America was founded. Regardless of his personal beliefs, as president he needs to show respect for how the majority of Americans feel about these issues - most Americans are pro-choice (for instance, Barbara Bush) and pro-embryonic stem cell research (for instance, Nancy Reagan). In any search for information about stem cell research, one must wade through tons of "pro-life" sites and sites of other religious organizations trying to force their archaic viewpoints onto the majority of Americans. One feels quite close to Copernicus at times like this. And even in mainstream...

We all know the Joneses. They had the same advantages as the Smiths. They knew what they were doing. From Laura Rowley at Yahoo Finance: "You'll see political pressure for wealth transfer -- and if you have saved responsibly, you'll be paying for people who have not." Wilcox argues that savers who are dutifully contributing to their 401(k) plans face a real risk, because they won't pay taxes on the money until they retire. "It's easy for me to imagine 10 years from now a political candidate saying, ‘We have all these people with $3 million in their 401(k) plans and we need to impose taxes on those people Here's a tale of two homeowners, the Smiths and the Joneses. The Smiths are savers.
Here's a sure-fire way to boost Obama's poll numbers - Sarah Palin harps on the abortion issue

"By maintaining the separation of church and state, the United States has avoided the intolerance which has so divided the rest of the world with religious wars... Can any of us refute the wisdom of Madison and the other framers? Can anyone look at the carnage in Iran, the bloodshed in Northem Ireland, or the bombs bursting in Lebanon and yet question the dangers of injecting religious issues into the affairs of state?""The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others unless the decent people connected to them recognize that religion has no place in public policy. They must learn to make their views known without trying to make their views the only alternatives."~ Barry Goldwater The McCain camp's new strategy is apparently to focus on Sarah Palin's extreme position on abortion. I am beginning to think Republicans want Obama to be president. Most of the country is...

Obama offers folksy platitudes, because he doesn't have a clue about economics

His recent comments on the global financial meltdown: "I know these are difficult times. I know folks are worried. But I also know that now is not the time for fear or panic. Now is the time for resolve and steady leadership. Because I know we can steer ourselves out of this crisis." Mr. Hope and Change has been leaning pretty heavily on FDR's "nothing to fear but fear itself" message these days. But he's no FDR. He's not much of anything, really, he never stuck with anything long enough. If you ever saw Robert Redford in "The Candidate", you'll remember how party insiders created his candidacy out of nothing, and sold him to the public like a pack of cigarettes - "For a better way, Bill McKay!" MOVIE SPOILER AHEAD... ... ...
Challenge Obama on the issues of experience and character

Seen on the conservative Little Green Footballs site (one of those sites where they tend to see things in black and white - you are either good (conservative) or bad (liberal), which is the same thing you see at Daily Kos only in reverse...): Comment: "McCain cannot win this election without the Hilary Dems. He has rightly or wrongly determined that he cannot win them over with a no-holds barred atack on Obama..." Comment in response: "From reading the blogs at the pro-Hillary sites, McCain does not have to fear that he would lose their support if he attacked Obama....in fact they are pleading with him to go hard after Obama. They detest Obama and the Dems for the way Hillary was treated." Affirmative.
Obama's ties to ACORN: he gave them $800,000 to "register voters" - 50% of registrations are dead, nonexistent, or use storefronts as their home addresses

From Bonnie Erbe at US News: Hate to say it, but when one thinks of voter fraud, one usually associates it with the GOP, the 2000 election, and the debate over who won Florida. You remember, voting machines that didn't work, long lines to vote in predominantly Democratic districts, and recounts that weren't accurate. This election brings with it stories of voter fraud, but this time on the Democratic side. It seems ACORN, a community organizing group that normally helps poor people with low-income housing issues, has registered thousands of people to vote in Democratic districts. Some of these supposed voters reportedly are dead, nonexistent, or use storefronts as their home addresses, as told by CNN: CAMPBELL BROWN: Now, it is officially nonpartisan. But this group works hard to register low-income voters who tend to vote for Democrats. ACORN's under fire over allegedly phony voter registration in several states, and Drew...

Sarah Palin on the latest Newsweek cover

Here's Sarah Palin on the latest Newsweek cover. It's true Newsweek tried to make her look bad. Who would not look bad with 1/4 of their face zoomed in to fill up the whole cover? Pores, facial hair, crows feet... we've all got 'em. We'd just prefer not to have them tripled in size on the cover of a national publication. The only thing is, it didn't work. 99% of American women of any age would love to look that bad. Sarah is one gorgeous woman to pull a shot like that off. Earlier this week we got leg shots from Reuters. Here's a novel idea - let's see the whole Sarah. Nobody is asking for special favors. Let's just see her photographed the same way the guys are photographed. That would be real nice....
