December 31, 2004Olympia Snowe, one of those rarest of rares, a moderate Republican, wants to know. From the Boston Globe: Aid for the wealthy and corporations? Mission accomplished. Aid for those who really need it? AWOL. Bush Co. continues to shame our nation, in every possible way. From the New York Times: They watch it, so you don’t have to: Read Chanakya Sen’s account here. December 30, 2004You won’t hear this on Fox News, so once again, reality is probably not filtering down to the mindless masses. From Robert Burns in the AP: First it was $15 million from the world’s richest nation. Then Bush upped it to $35 million after he was dragged from his golf game by the recriminations of the world. I love Independent Senator Patrick Leahy. Here’s what he said in response: “We spend $35 million before breakfast every day [...] It’s nice to know George Bush Sr. and James Baker and all the others in their set who pulled strings to enthrone George W. Bush in 2000 are getting their comeuppance. Things didn’t turn out as they planned; they are suffering along with the rest of us. From Sidney Blumenthal in Salon: Jerome Armstrong always has interesting things to say over at MyDD. Check out the latest about a non-partisan redistricting ballot initative in Florida. This makes sense for every state. I had no idea how skewed representation is in Florida relative to party affiliation of citizens – in a 50/50/ state, Republicans run [...] From Phillip Carter in Slate: December 29, 2004Don’t hold your breath waiting for the “compassionate” “moral” “Christian” to do that. He only tore himself away from one of his many vacations 4 days after the tragedy to mutter a few incoherent words after he was shamed into it. Check this out – typical. Bush and his cronies have proven again and again they are just in it for themselves. Which is the complete opposite of the teachings of Jesus, someone they use shamelessly. From the Washington Post: December 28, 2004Check out these political cartoons: December 27, 2004Saw this over at MyDD.com: The conservatives who think reality isn’t a dirty word (a small but sometimes sensible minority) managed to persuade themselves Bush would see the error of his ways in his second term. So they promoted his election based upon wishful thinking they could have it both ways – Bush would see the light, and they [...] December 26, 2004Incredible that people voted for Bush Co. out of fear, when the only thing they have to fear is Bush Co. itself. The only way to address such issues as terrorism and nuclear proliferation is with the cooperation of other nations, but Bush Co. is hell bent on alienating every last one of our [...] As many in the reality-based community cautioned prior to the Iraq invasion, terrorism would increase, not decrease as a result of Bush Co. policies. From CNN: December 24, 2004Peace on earth. To recap, after blocking a huge number of Clinton’s nominees (not even giving them hearings!), Bush got all but 10 of his nominees approved – he had the most nominees approved among presidents since 1980. But that’s not enough, Bush wants the most extreme of the extreme on the bench for life, by hook [...] December 23, 2004As the truth trickles in after the election… From the AP: From CBS Marketwatch: From the We do not concede Coalition. From Robert Scheer in the Los Angeles Times: From Glen Martin in the San Francisco Chronicle: “One Ring to rule them all.” Republicans must be quite certain they will be in power forever (hey, they got away with overtly fixing the elections in 2000, but that was kind of messy, so they came up with voting machines with no paper trail in 2004; imagine what’s in store for 2008.) [...] December 22, 2004Check it out at MyDD. I was floored by how much evidence of voting machine irregularities exists, and how this evidence is predominantly in Democratic districts. The Democratic party should make verifiable voting a top priority if they ever wish to be more than a marginal party, and if they wish to live up to the name of their [...] The latest word is a number of these officers will testify at the Senate confirmation hearings. From the New York Times: Not that die hard Bushies will mind, but I’m thinking some of the bright ones who actually listened when Jesus taught how to treat others (true, there aren’t many Bushies who give a damn about others, but maybe just enough to make a difference) might have a second thought or two. And maybe the [...] Much better than the slap on the wrist Bush Co. gave Micro$oft (and Bill Gates, of course, returned the favor to Bush Co. with campaign donations.) From Reuters: December 21, 2004I pulled out some quotes/stats from an article by David Sirota in The Nation: Most Americans believe Bush favors the wealthy: “… almost every major poll shows Americans already essentially believe Republicans are waging a class war on behalf of the rich… In March 2004, for example, a Washington Post poll found a whopping 67 [...] From Liza Featherstone from her book Selling Women Short: The Landmark Battle for Workers’ Rights at Wal-Mart in The Nation: Bush and his little dog, too (arf, arf, lick, lick, Tony Blair) one day will be held accountable for so many deaths and disabling injuries that never had to happen. Blair’s lies about “democracy and terror” sicken me, when in Iraq, the former is a farce, and the latter only began after the invasion. [...] Maybe Bush really said he has a man date. Damned media, they never get it right. Bush approval ratings: From the Washington Post: From the Los Angeles Times: December 20, 2004Moral Bush defends moral Rumsfeld. From Reuters: It would be nice if our country was a model for democracy throughout the world, instead of a deterrent. From Reuters: The only thing the guy in the beat up, rusty old truck with the “Bush Cheney ‘04″ bumper sticker on it got from Bush is the smug reassurance that he’s part of the “whites only” club. What bumper sticker guy doesn’t realize is that in Bush’s eyes, he’ll only be allowed in through the [...] December 19, 2004More on Iraq War veterans here. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God,” Jesus said. The “Christian” right is much too busy being unChristian to listen to Jesus. The Effect of Electronic Voting Machines on Change in Support for Bush in the 2004 Florida Elections
In Florida, George W. Bush, a man incredibly unpopular among Democrats (and we all know that’s an understatement), gained double the number of votes in counties that used electronic voting machines in 2004 compared to 2000, with biggest increases in, you guessed it, the heavily Democratic counties. What goes around, comes around. Republicans are running the table now, but this will not always be the case. Eventually even the most enthusiastic ostrich must come up for air. So it would seem to me ensuring fair elections is an American issue, not a partisan one. And as this is [...] Why does Bush hate our freedom? December 17, 2004I’m Christian, and I’ll be celebrating Christmas, just as I do every year. But like most liberals, I respect the faith of others – somehow I always thought that’s what Jesus would do. But O’Reilly thinks it’s Christian to lie about the faith of others. And perhaps he’s just too busy writing [...] From Christopher Smith in the Salt Lake Tribune: This is a must read. From Bill Moyers: The dogs are turning on Bush’s guy. They kept their mouths shut about Bush’s blunders until he got elected, and now it’s payback time. But Bush (never one for the goings on in the “reality-based community”) says Rummy’s doing just fine. If Rummy bites the dust, that will make 10 of [...] December 16, 2004Great idea – this way the Secret Service can’t round up those in the anti-Bush tee shirts and arrest them, the way they did during the campaign. Why does Bush hate our freedom? From the Washington Post: December 15, 2004Once more, Bush mocks our nation’s traditions of honor and dignity. I’m reminded of the footage on the History Channel of Hitler in similar mock ceremonies with his henchmen. From Anne Gerhart in the Washington Post: From Sukumar Muralidharan in Sify: December 14, 2004Must be nice to be able to recount votes! Bush Co.’s crony-provided electronic voting machines leave nothing whatsoever to recount, because the Bushublicans refused to require a paper trail. From the AP: While Bush Co. and the Bushublicans have been burning bridges – and our money – with foolish foreign and economic policy – “Old Europe” is poised to get the last laugh. From Mark Schapiro in The Nation: December 13, 2004A day late and a dollar short, McCain. Well, then again, a day late, but you got your dollars. Thirty pieces of silver. From ABC News: Rudy Guiliani has eagerly licked his master Bush’s boots all year, with a greedy eye on treats to be dispensed post-election. From Mark Hosenball in Newsweek: Standing in line for 8 hours to vote on machines using secret code programmed by partisan companies accountable to no one? Is this a joke? How do you ask a man to be the last one to die for a mistake? Or become disabled for life. From the Boston Globe: From Geoffrey Lean in the Independent: From Paul Krugman in the New York Times: From the Washington Post: Waist Deep in the Big Muddy by Pete Seeger, © 1967 Melody Trails, Inc. New York, NY December 12, 2004A picture is worth a thousand words… check out these political cartoons: The latest job stats still aren’t coming up roses, but I’m sure after another four years of tax cuts for the wealthy and sending jobs offshore and driving up the deficit, the owner of the rusty old car with the Bush bumper sticker I saw today will be able to afford a new car. [...] December 11, 2004From Planned Parenthood: Yesterdays’s reports were of U.S. soldiers on missions to kill corpse-eating dogs and cats in Fallujah. If the disease spread by feral animals doesn’t get the citizens who managed to dodge bullets and bombs that are returning to find their homes and businesses destroyed, the depleted uranium will. These people are doomed, thanks [...] Take a moment to visit the U.N.’s Apathy is Lethal site… When a ship is sinking, people with sense jump off – but Bush Co. is stopping many from doing just that. Stop lossing, that is, representing the latest of freedoms lost in this country under Bush Co. Once in the army, always in the army. And there seems little recourse for these [...] December 8, 2004From John Yewell in the Salt Lake Tribune: Bush Co. rushed into a voluntary war without adequate planning or equipment. Rumsfeld thought he was standing in front of one of those photoshopped military audiences from Bush’s campaign ads, when suddenly he was asked by a real, living, breathing, soldier, Why? From the AP: Those of us who really care about moral values are appalled. Bush voters are just appalling. From David DeBatto in Salon: December 7, 2004I guess these reality-based CIA officers have since been shown the door by Bush Co. From the New York Times: From Catherine Philp in The Times (UK): December 6, 2004Here are some red state – blue state facts and figures to counter the right wing gloaters with their flyover country maps. December 3, 2004From the William C. Velasquez Institute: Abortion can only lead to sterility if it’s an illegal one. From Reuters: December 2, 2004Remember when Clinton went to other countries, and the people there welcomed him? Warmly? Bush can only dream about what that must be like. From CNN: From MSNBC: From Arianna Huffington: December 1, 2004From USA Today: From : Bush is out playing golf, and his cronies and supporters don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves. But at least 49% of us here care, so read about it. As quoted in this week’s issue of The Nation: Heartwarming that they know half of us didn’t want this any more than they did. What can I say. There cannot be true democracy unless women are given the opportunity to take responsibility for their own lives." ~ Hillary Rodham Clinton "If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse gift will find a fitting place." ~ Margaret Mead "Of my two 'handicaps' being female put more obstacles in my path than being black." ~ Shirley Chisholm "Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. Kennedy "I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." ~ James Madison "When you think of the long and gloomy history of man, you will find more hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have ever been committed in the name of rebellion." ~ C. Roosevelt "If somebody tells you you ought to quit, it's because they're afraid you won't." ~ Bill Clinton "The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. "Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." ~ Robert F. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children." ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower "When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?" ~ Eleanor Roosevelt "I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent." ~ Mohandas Gandhi "The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends by defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. Hypocrisy "And thus I clothe my naked villany with odd old ends stol'n forth of holy writ, and seem a saint when most I play the devil." ~ William Shakespeare "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing... in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men... Mencken "All political movements are like this - we are in the right, everyone else is in the wrong. The people on our own side who disagree with us are heretics, and they start becoming enemies. With it comes an absolute conviction of your own moral superiority. There's oversimplification in everything, and a terror of flexibility." ~ Doris Lessing Pretended Patriotism "Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism." ~ George Washington "Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism - how passionately I hate them!" ~ Albert Einstein "True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else." ~ Clarence Darrow "When a whole nation is roaring Patriotism at the top of its voice, I am fain to explore the cleanness of its hands and purity of its heart." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson "The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them." ~ George Orwell "To (say) that we are to stand by the president right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, but it's morally treasonable to the American public." ~ Theodore Roosevelt
